Chula
Vista is the second largest city in San Diego county and has a
reputation for its small-town charm and family friendly atmosphere. The
name Chula Vista means beautiful view. Moderately priced
residences are still plentiful in Chula Vista real estate, and some of
the business park developments are incorporating middle-income housing
amongst the commerce. Old Chula Vista homes are smaller with detached
garages. Once building crossed the 805 to the east, New Chula Vista
emerged taking advantage of recently generated money with brick-lined
crosswalks and decorative street lamps.
Chula
Vista homes are built on mesas and have lovely views of the mountains.
Some Chula Vista housing is within gated communities, others just
encourage a slow-down of traffic, signifying family homes with
neighborhood activity. Newer homes are also larger with up to six
bedrooms and tile roofs. Eastlake and
Eastlake Greens
to the eastern end of Chula Vista are recent additions to the housing
stock.
Chula
Vista business is thriving, with close proximity to the border and a
large port. Industries include aerospace, shipping, and multi-national
corporations. Companies include UPS, the U.S. Post Office, Hitachi, and
Gateway. Business parks are plentiful and more are in the works. Several
major retail centers are also in building stages, helping to generate
more employment for local residents. These companies find the area a
good location from which to manage their manufacturing and distribution
operations both in the United States and in Mexico. The companies are
also attracted by affordable land and a strong pool of workers.
Chula
Vista City schools encourage learning diversities: performing arts and
science magnet programs; five charter schools emphasizing technology,
dual language and extended year calendars; extended school day and
enrichment programs focusing on the environment, literacy, and Olympic
sports; AP studies, college entrance support programs, career
preparation programs including internships, work experience and ROP
Regional Occupation program. With a high population of Asians, many
students take advantage of Eastlake High School’s Japanese Saturday
program, designed for growing students.
There
are also specialized academies for marine science, business leadership,
media and journalism, creative and performing arts,
science/technology/research skills, foreign language and global studies,
marine and navy junior reserve Officers Training Corps ROTC. Sweetwater
recently lead the state in California Distinguished School awards,
recognition for improved test scores and classroom instruction.
Southwestern College is close by.
There
is no shortage of recreational facilities in this city.
The US Olympic
Training Center is the only facility of its kind in the US, training
athletes in nine Olympic sports. Coors Amphitheatre seats 20,000, and
tours a wide range of world-renowned entertainers. Knotts Soak City has
22 rides including speed slides, wave pools, and body flumes. There are
two National Wildlife refuges, one of 2209 acres, consisting of salt
marsh, mudflats, and coastal uplands. Wildlife observation and
environmental education are welcomed.
Chula
Vista yacht harbor features fine dining restaurants, a bayside park and
900 slips for yachts, sailboats, and other pleasure crafts. The city has
5 recreation centers including a youth center, senior center, 2 local
pools and a women’s club. There are seven parks with all kinds of sports
recreational facilities and barbeque grills encourage outdoor picnics.
Chula Vista golfing is supported by four golf courses; one of them is a
private country club. Grocery stores, theatres, department stores, even
large warehouse stores make most things at the fingertips of local
residents.
