This mountain community sits at the base of the Cuyamaca Mountains, with an elevation of 4,000. The landscape is rural, and the climate warm and dry, which is a change in setting from many coast towns. Alpine is renowned for the Viejas Indians and their casino, occupying reservation land. This unincorporated town is located just off Interstate 8 and is 30 miles east of the City of San Diego. The casino, outlet center, and Viejas Concerts in the Park draw many visitors to the mountain town, contributing to the local economy. Barona Casino is also close by.
The outlet mall is located on the reservation lands at Viejas. The town is also equipped with necessities such as a library, post office, restaurants, motels, deli, bakery, and other conveniences for a modern lifestyle, but still manages to retain a country atmosphere.
